Collaroy Rock Pool - Apr12

I continued my trek up the northern beaches and Collaroy got the rock pool photography treatment this weekend. Apparently Collaroy Beach is the second longest in Sydney, with a total length of 3.2km.

The rock pool, although very interesting, was fairly unremarkable. However I got a terrific sunrise, one, if not the best I have seen so far on this project. The light changed every few minutes and it seemed as though every hue was represented at some point. As usual, enjoy the shots and to enlarge, simply click on each image :-)

Dee Why Rock Pool - Mar12

Another weekend, another rock pool - although note that I was in Adelaide last weekend for my friend Sherina's 40th birthday! This one, unlike the pool at North Curl Curl (a.k.a. Dee Why Point Rock Pool), was very accessible and I had no trouble getting there.


What has surprised me so far on this project is that I have had almost identical sunrises - hardly a cloud in the sky apart from ones on the distant horizon. Obviously a cloudy morning is not good, but sometimes a few clouds thrown in makes for interesting contrasts.


The Dee Why Surf Living Saving Club built the rock pool between 1915 and 1919. More recently it has had a bit of a makeover. One feature I loved about this one was the surrounding rocky areas which were a treat to photograph in addition to the pool. Enjoy the shots!

North Curl Curl Rock Pool - Mar11

This one was a challenge, at least from the logistical point of view! I found myself clambering over slippery rocks in an attempt to get there before the best of the morning light had gone. I had no idea about the small path that led you safely there from the car park. Anyway, I almost lost my gear in the incoming tide so decided to back track whereby I eventually found the path.

Other photographers were present and they probably thought I was some lunatic that had little respect for self-preservation (gear included)!

Anyway, I made it in time and did a very quick shoot. It was a lovely morning as well.

South Curl Curl Rock Pool - Feb11

Two rock pools in two weekends - I am on a roll! I loved this one, but the drive was fairly substantial (50 kms round trip).

The sodium lights create the rich orange hue. Some photographers do not like it, but it resonates with me. The light changed substantially during the one-hour shoot and there were plenty of people down there. I had a swim afterwards - a great pool and excellent for doing laps.

Dawn Fraser Rock Pool - Feb11

Finally I have resumed my rock pool project of the beautiful rock pools scattered about the NSW coastline! What had stalled the project was the fact I gave away my basic graduated filter kit. I therefore had committed myself to buying the Cokin Z-Pro series graduated filter kit.

However they were next to impossible to get hold of. Global stock was non existent. I randomly checked at an online Sydney store a couple of weeks ago and - woo-hoo - they were in stock! I snapped up a set and am now resuming my project with much enthusiasm.

So....my first early morning trip involved photographing the Dawn Fraser Rock Pool which is located at Elkington Park in Balmain. The pool is one of the oldest pools in Sydney, built in 1880.

Cookie Chilling at Home - Feb12

It was about time for another photo shoot. Cookie is growing up so fast. She now weighs over 8kg - these shots were taken about 10 days ago and I am sure she has grown a fair bit since then!
